The First West African Workshop!
February 19, 2019
Phages for Global Health is pleased to announce the call for applications for the first West Africa Phage Workshop! This hands-on laboratory training workshop will be held during July 7 - 20, 2019, in Ghana at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. During the workshop, participants will learn how to isolate and characterize phages as antibiotic alternatives for use against antibiotic-resistant bacteria.
Applicants are invited to apply from throughout West Africa, and up to 25 participants will be selected from the applicant pool. Applications should be submitted online through www.phagesforglobalhealth.org.
We gratefully acknowledge the funders for this workshop, which include many individual donors as well as several organizations:
-
Conservation, Food and Health Foundation (USA)
-
The Company of Biologists (UK)
-
Lions Club of Maarn (Netherlands)
This first Phage Workshop in West Africa follows upon our two previous successful Phage Workshops in East Africa, hosted in Uganda and Kenya in 2017 and 2018. Later in 2019 we plan to launch the call for applications for our third East Africa Phage Workshop, which will be held in Tanzania — stay tuned!
Best wishes,
Tobi Nagel, PhD - Founder & President
James B. Lin - Secretary
Karen Erickson - Treasurer
Three of our workshop instructors, Drs. Martha Clokie (UK), Ben Chan (USA), and Tobi Nagel (USA) — pictured left to right — were each invited speakers at the Phage Futures Congress in Washington DC last month. This was a unique conference since it focused primarily on practical aspects of bringing phage products to market.
